Wondrwall Thermostat Troubleshooting

A step-by-step guide to diagnosing and fixing common Wondrwall Thermostat heating and scheduling issues.

Introduction

Heating issues in the home can have many causes, from installation errors to faulty zone valves. The Wondrwall Thermostat itself is a simple, mechanically reliable device with limited internal controls. Advanced features such as scheduling and app integration are managed by the connected Wondrwall Light Switch.

The thermostat maintains a target temperature by switching the heating on and off. It has only two operating states:

  • Heating: shown by a flame symbol on the screen.

  • Not Heating: no flame symbol is visible.

Note: This thermostat does not have a dedicated Off mode. If no flame symbol is shown, heating is off.

For more detailed information about the thermostat, please refer to our Wondrwall Thermostat Guide.

Troubleshooting for No Heating

If you encounter any issues, such as your heating system not activating, please follow the structured troubleshooting steps outlined below.

You will learn how to identify any problems and also how you can effectively resolve them.

Step 1: Check If the Thermostat Is Calling for Heat

To begin, it is essential to verify that the thermostat is actively requesting heat.

  1. Tap the Up (+) button to increase the target temperature above the current room temperature.
  2. Look for the flame symbol on the thermostat screen. If the flame symbol appears, there should also be an audible click.
    • If there is no audible click and RM (Remote Mode, see below) is not displayed on the screen, the thermostat's internal relay may be broken—replace the device.
  3. If there is no flame symbol, check for Remote Mode (RM) and disable it.

Disabling Remote Mode (RM):

If the thermostat display shows RM, it indicates that the device is currently operating in remote mode.

Remote Mode (RM) is a setting that allows the thermostat to control a remote relay, which is often utilised in situations where direct wiring is not feasible. When Remote Mode is activated, the thermostat will not engage its internal relay, meaning it will not send electrical signals to the zone valve or boiler to generate heat. To disable this.

  1. Press and hold the Down (-) button for 3 seconds to enter programming mode.
  2. Use the Up (+) or Down (-) buttons to navigate through the settings.
  3. Find the Remote Mode setting, shown as RM on the screen and wait a few moments for the thermostat to confirm and enter the chosen mode. The screen will change to indicate this.
  4. Navigate to the dS RM option using the Up (+) button to disable Remote Mode.

Step 2: Check That the Boiler Is Set Correctly

Check that the controls on the front panel of the boiler are set to the appropriate mode.
If you feel uncertain or uncomfortable performing this check, please refer to the boiler manual or skip this step for now.

  1. Ensure the boiler is set to provide central heating (not just hot water).
  2. Confirm the boiler is powered on and not in standby or fault mode.
  3. Check for error codes on the boiler display and refer to the boiler manual.

Step 3: Ensure Thermostats Are Controlling the Correct Zones

Occasionally, a minor wiring mix-up may lead to the issue at hand. Checking for this problem is quite simple; just follow the steps below:

  1. Set the downstairs thermostat higher and confirm which radiators heat up (if any).
  2. Repeat for the upstairs thermostat.
  3. If the wrong zone heats up, the wiring is reversed - an electrician is needed to correct this.

Step 4: Check the Zone Valves

A zone valve is a motorized valve used in hydronic heating or cooling systems to control the flow of water or steam to different areas (zones) of a home, allowing for independent temperature control in each zone.

Motorised Zone Valve

  1. Locate the zone valves near the boiler or pump.
  2. Test the manual lever:
    • If very stiff, the valve is not energised. If the thermostat is calling for heat yet
    • If moves easily, the valve is either energised by the thermostat calling for heat or the internal motor has broken. If the thermostat is currently not calling for heat, replace the zone valve.
    • If this action activates the heating, the problem is likely related to either the thermostat or the zone valve motor itself.
    • Adjust the lever to the locked position; you will find a groove that allows you to secure the arm in place
       3. Call for heat using the Wondrwall Thermostat (increase target temperature above         current temperature using Up (+)) and listen for the sound of a zone valve opening.           Additionally, check if the boiler starts booting up as expected.
  • If you hear the valve open and the boiler begins to operate, it indicates that the electrical system is functioning properly. To ensure reliability, repeat this process several times to eliminate the possibility of a valve that may intermittently become stuck.
  • If there is no sound, the boiler fails to start, and the flame symbol is displayed on the Wondrwall Thermostat, it is necessary to conduct an electrical test on the system. This may indicate that there is no live signal being sent to the zone valve. If it is confirmed that the thermostat is supplying voltage to the zone valve but it is not opening, the zone valve will need to be replaced.

No Heating Overview Table

Use the following table to quickly determine why you may have no heating.

Troubleshooting for Heating Stuck On

If you discover that your heating system remains continuously on, follow the step-by-step troubleshooting guide below to pinpoint the issue and learn how to resolve it effectively.

Step 1: Confirm the device is in Heating Mode

If the device is set to Cooling mode while connected to a heating system, it will simultaneously attempt to heat the home while trying to cool it down. This can create a conflicting situation, leading to an unwanted feedback loop where the temperature in the home continues to rise.

  • Press and hold the Down (-) button for 3 seconds to enter Programming Mode.
  • Wait for the screen to display Pro Set.
  • Press the Up (+) button to switch between Cooling and Heating modes.
  • Wait a few seconds for the thermostat to confirm the change.

Step 2: Check Zone Valves

If a zone valve fails or gets stuck, it can cause heating to stay on continuously or prevent certain zones from working correctly.

To test the zone valve:

  • Locate the zone valves.
  • If the heating is stuck on, manually move the lever on the zone valve.
    • If it moves freely, the valve is stuck open and should be replaced.
    • If stiff, the valve motor may have failed.
  • Replace the zone valve if necessary.

Other Issues

In addition to the common troubleshooting steps outlined earlier, you may encounter some less frequent issues with your Wondrwall Thermostat. These issues can often stem from wiring problems, device settings, or maintenance needs. Below, we detail some of these potential issues, their possible causes, and recommended solutions to help you resolve them efficiently.

Issue Possible Causes Solution
Upstairs thermostat turns on downstairs heating (or vice versa) Wiring is reversed Electrician needs to correct wiring
Thermostat isn’t clicking Remote Mode enabled; failed internal relay Disable Remote Mode; if issue persists, replace thermostat
Only some radiators coming on TRV issues; radiators need bleeding Check TRVs and bleed radiators
Temperature on thermostat is incorrect Incorrect offset setting Adjust the temperature offset

Adjusting the Temperature Offset

Sometimes the thermostat may display a room temperature that feels slightly too high or too low compared to reality. This can be caused by thermostat placement (e.g., near a draft or radiator) or small calibration differences.

The offset setting lets you correct this so the displayed temperature more closely matches actual conditions. For example, if your thermostat consistently reads 2°C higher than the room really is, you can apply a -2°C offset.

To adjust the temperature offset:

  • Press and hold the Down (-) button for 3 seconds to enter Programming Mode.

  • Navigate through the settings using the Up (+) or Down (-) buttons.

  • Locate the Offset Setting.

  • Adjust the temperature offset to correct discrepancies.

FAQs

Q: Why doesn’t my thermostat show an “Off” mode?
A: The Wondrwall Thermostat only has two states: Heating (flame symbol visible) and Not Heating (no symbol). There is no dedicated “Off” display.

Q: What does the flame symbol mean?
A: The flame symbol shows that the thermostat is calling for heat and has engaged the relay. No symbol means heating is off.

Q: What is Remote Mode (RM)?
A: Remote Mode lets the thermostat control a remote relay instead of switching the boiler or zone valve directly. When RM is on, the internal relay will not click.
