Troubleshooting The Wondrwall IR Panel

A step-by-step guide to diagnosing and fixing heating, scheduling, and control issues with your Wondrwall Infrared Panel.

Introduction

The Wondrwall Infrared Panel is a slim, wall or ceiling mounted heater designed to keep individual rooms warm in an intelligent and energy efficient way. Unlike traditional convection heaters, the IR Panel emits safe infrared heat that warms people, furniture, and other surfaces in the room directly. These warmed surfaces then gently release heat back into the space, creating consistent comfort while using less energy.

This article will help you diagnose and resolve common issues with your IR Panel, such as when it won’t heat, when the room doesn’t reach the desired temperature, or when it cannot be controlled via the Wondrwall App. By following the step-by-step troubleshooting guide below, you can often restore normal operation without the need for further technical support.

For detailed specifications and to learn more about how infrared heating works in your home, please refer to our [How Wondrwall Efficiently Heats Your Home] article.

Troubleshooting for No Heating

If your IR Panel is not heating at all after it has been turned ON, follow these steps to diagnose and resolve the issue.

Step 1: Check the Power Supply

  • Verify mains power to the panel’s circuit.

  • Locate your home’s fuse box and identify the breaker that supplies power to your infrared panel.

  • Check that the breaker is switched ON. If it is in the middle or OFF position, it has likely tripped.

  • If the breaker has tripped, reset it once by moving the toggle fully to OFF before switching it back to ON.

Warning: If the breaker trips again, do not attempt to reset it repeatedly. This may indicate an electrical fault. Stop and contact a qualified electrician before using the panel again, and/or contact Wondrwall Support, and we can advise next steps.

Step 2: Confirm the Device is Online in the Wondrwall App

  • Open the Wondrwall App on your smartphone or tablet.

  • On the home screen, tap the Heating Widget to access your Heating Overview Screen.

  • Tap the Electric Heating icon to access your Device Overview Screen

  • Select the room or zone assigned to your infrared panel. The image below shows when an IR Panel is switched off

  • If the room shows as Offline (often greyed out and unable to be selected), the panel is not receiving control signals, and therefore is unable to be turned on from the Wondrwall App.

  • The IR Panel communicates through a Wondrwall Relay, which connects your IR Panel to the corresponding Light Switch.

  • If the room is offline, troubleshoot the Light Switch’s connectivity using our [Troubleshooting the Wondrwall Light Switch, will write later] guide.

Step 3: Check Heating Settings

  • In the Wondrwall App, open the Heating Widget.

  • From the Heating Overview Screen, tap the Electric Heating Icon

  • Select the room linked to your infrared Panel.

  • Confirm that:

    • Schedules are enabled (toggle is switched on). Your scheduling Icon can be found on the screen that appears when you select the room your IR Panel is in on the Wondrwall App. Confirm also that a Schedule has been set. You can learn how to schedule the heating in your home by following this link

    • Comfort Temperature is set at least 1–2°C above the current room temperature. The icon that controls your Comfort Temperature can be found when you tap the schedule icon. It will appear as shown below.

Note: If the Comfort Temperature is too low, the panel will not activate even if a schedule is active.

Step 4: Inspect the Panel & Environment

  • Ensure the panel surface is unobstructed, with no furniture, drying clothes, or wall hangings covering it.

Warning: Keep the panel and the area in close proximity around it clear of furniture and other obstacles, to avoid damage as the Wondrwall IR Panel can reach a surface temperature of 90 degrees Celsius. Do not touch when switched on.

  • Check for draughts (e.g., gaps around windows or under doors) or poor insulation in the room, as these can significantly reduce heating efficiency. Leaving objects close to the heaters can lower their performance, so make sure the surrounding area stays clear.

  • Stand near the panel and:

    • Listen for unusual sounds such as buzzing or crackling.

    • Look for any discolouration, scorching, or damage to the surface.

    • Smell for unusual or burning odours.

Warning: If you detect any of the above, turn off the panel at the breaker immediately and contact Wondrwall Support (See Below).

Step 5: Test Panel Function

  • In the Heating Widget, temporarily increase the Comfort Temperature by 3–4°C above the current room temperature.

  • Wait 10–15 minutes to see if the panel surface begins to warm. Infrared heating may take a few minutes to be felt directly, especially in cooler rooms.

If there still isn't any warmth, continue to Step 6.

Step 6: Contact Wondrwall Support

 Step 3: Consider Room Conditions

  • Check for draughts or poor insulation that may cause heat loss

  • Close windows and doors when heating to retain warmth.

Heating Below Expectation Overview Table

Issue Possible Causes Solution
The room feels cold even though the panel is warm Infrared heats people and surfaces directly, not the air; draughts or poor insulation reducing heat efficiency Seal draughts, improve home insulation, and remove any obstructions on/in front of the panel to increase heating capability.
The Comfort Temperature set in the Wondrwall app is too low Settings are not configured for the desired warmth and require changing  Increase Comfort Temperature in the scheduling section of the Heating Widget to at least 1–2°C above thje current room temperature or to your desired Comfort temperature.

Troubleshooting for App Control & Scheduling Issues

If you cannot control your infrared panel from the Wondrwall App, or if schedules are not activating:

Step 1: Ensure Your Phone and Devices Are Connected

  • Make sure your phone or tablet is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or mobile data

  • Confirm that all Wondrwall Light Switches in your home are online and connected to your home Wi-Fi. The infrared panel does not connect directly to Wi-Fi; it relies on the Light Switch for communication

  • If you have changed your home network, you will need to connect your light switches to this network before being able to operate them and the rest of your home via the Wondrwall App. Follow this link to find detailed instructions on how to complete a Wi-Fi swap on your Wondrwall Light Switch(es)

Step 2: Check which Scene your Home is on.

  • In the Wondrwall App, open the Home screen

  • Check the scene selector at the bottom of the screen

  • If the home is in Away Mode, all rooms will be set to your selected Saving Temperature

  • If your home is in Holiday Mode, the system will maintain a room temperature of 12C which is the assigned temperature for frost protection.

  • Switch your system to Home Mode by swiping up the current scene icon and choosing the Home option to restore normal defined schedules

Step 3: Confirm a Schedule is Configured

  • On the Heating Overview screen, select the electric heating option and then the room linked to your Infrared Panel you are troubleshooting.

  • Tap Schedules to see if a heating schedule is set.

  • If none exist, create and save one. Follow this link for detailed instructions

Step 4: Ensure the Schedule is Enabled

  • In the Heating Widget, check that the schedule toggle is turned on.

Note: If the toggle is off, schedules will not run even if they are configured.

Step 5: Check for Dynamic Tariff Effects

  • If your system is linked to a dynamic tariff (e.g. Octopus Agile), the schedule may adjust automatically to heat during lower-cost periods.

  • This can cause heating to start earlier, pause mid-schedule, or run outside the displayed times.

Step 6: Contact Wondrwall Support

If scheduling still does not work:

  • Gather details of your schedule settings, room name, and observed behaviour.

  • Contact Wondrwall Technical Support via live chat or by creating a ticket in the app.

 Other Issues Overview Table

1. Panel Heats Unexpectedly When Not Scheduled

If your IR Panel heats outside of its scheduled times:

  1. Check for overlapping manual control

    • In the Device Overview Screen of the Wondrwall App, tap the Electric Heating Icon and open the room linked to your IR Panel you are troubleshooting.

    • Look for any manual Comfort Temperature changes that may still be active.

    • Cancel manual overrides by lowering the temperature or switching back to schedule mode.

  2. Review your schedule settings

  3. Check for dynamic tariff optimisation

    • If you are on a dynamic tariff (e.g., Octopus Agile), the system may pre-heat during cheaper periods.

    • Review your Tariff Settings in the Wondrwall App to confirm if optimisation is enabled.

    • See our Tariff Settings guide.

Tip: Dynamic tariff optimisation can start heating before your schedule to take advantage of low-cost periods; this is expected behaviour.

2. Panel Temperature Reading Inaccurate

If the temperature shown in the Wondrwall App seems wrong for the panel’s room:

  1. Check the controlling device

    • IR Panels are controlled via a Wondrwall Light Switch and/or Smart Relay.

    • The temperature reading comes from the controlling Light Switch, not the panel itself.

  2. Verify the Light Switch location

    • If the Light Switch is near a heat source or in direct sunlight, it may report a higher reading.

    • If it’s in a draughty area, it may report a lower reading.

  3. Calibrate the temperature offset

    • In the Wondrwall App, open the Light Switch settings for the relevant room.

    • Adjust the temperature offset until readings match a trusted thermometer in the same location.

  4. Contact Technical Support if calibration fails

    • If readings remain inaccurate after calibration, contact Wondrwall Support for further checks.

Note: See Troubleshooting the Wondrwall Light Switch for detailed connectivity and calibration steps.

The table below outlines other potential IR issues, causes and solutions for you to implement.

Issue Possible Causes Solution
Panel heats unexpectedly when not scheduled Schedule overlap with manual control; system preheating due to dynamic tariff optimisation Review schedules in Heating Widget; check for dynamic tariff behaviour
Panel temperature reading inaccurate Temperature sensor offset in controlling Light Switch Calibrate the temperature offset via the Light Switch settings in the app or contact Technical Support
