Installing the Wondrwall Light Switch
Guidance for qualified electricians on safely installing and wiring the Wondrwall Light Switch for lighting control and environmental sensing.
Introduction
The Wondrwall Light Switch replaces a standard light switch and forms the central control point for lighting and environmental sensing in the home. Correct installation is critical: improper wiring, shallow backboxes, or missing neutrals can prevent commissioning and cause delays on site.
This article provides step-by-step instructions for qualified electricians to install the Wondrwall Light Switch.
Safety & Compliance
Warning: This product must only be installed by qualified electricians.
-
Isolation: Isolate the circuit before beginning work and verify the supply is de-energised with an approved tester.
-
Regulations: Follow BS7671 wiring regulations and all relevant building codes.
-
PPE: Wear safety glasses, insulated gloves, and suitable site-approved protective gear.
-
Backbox depth: A minimum of 35 mm is required.
Before You Begin
Prerequisites
-
Neutral present at the switch location.
-
Stable internet connection in the property (required for commissioning later).
Tools required
-
Insulated screwdriver set.
-
Voltage tester.
-
Fixings for securing to the backbox if required.
Installation Steps
Step 1: Remove the Cover
-
Push the cover upwards slightly to create a small gap between the cover and the main switch body.
-
Option A – Hand method: Grip one side of the cover and gently pull to release the clips.
-
Option B – Card method: Insert a thin plastic card (e.g. old debit card) into the gap at the top in portrait orientation. Slide in a zig-zag motion to release the clips.
-
Carefully ease the cover off. Do not force it—if it feels stuck, check both clips are released.
-
Store the cover safely to prevent damage.
Step 2: Connect the Power Feed
-
Connect live (L) and neutral (N) supply cables to the clearly labelled power input terminals on the rear of the device.
-
Tighten screw terminals securely.
-
Ensure all wiring is fully enclosed with no bare copper exposed.
-
Confirm that insulation colours are correct and clearly identifiable (if sleeving a grey conductor, sleeve consistently and appropriately).
Step 3: Connect Lighting Circuits
The Wondrwall Light Switch supports up to three gang lighting circuits.
-
Connect the live and neutral of each circuit to the output terminals.
-
Always connect to L3/N3 first, then L2/N2, and only use L1/N1 as a last resort.
-
For a single gang switch, use L3/N3.
-
For a two gang switch, use L3/N3 and L2/N2.
-
For a three gang switch, use L3/N3, L2/N2, and L1/N1.
-
-
If present, place extractor fans on their own dedicated output.
-
Any unused touch sensors will be reassigned automatically during commissioning.
-
Refer to the Light Switch Technical Data Sheet for detailed output load values before finalising connections.
Step 4: Fix and Re-attach Cover
-
Secure the switch base to the backbox with the two fixing screws.
-
Ensure screws are tight enough for a flush finish but not excessively long.
-
Re-attach the cover, aligning the PIR semicircle on the switch body with the matching semicircle on the cover.
-
Check that there are no overlaps or gaps once fitted.
Verification
After restoring power:
-
Confirm the device powers on (LEDs briefly illuminate).
-
Check that lighting circuits operate correctly in manual mode.
- Verify that the cover is properly secured with no visible gaps.
Note: The best practise is to confirm circuits are connected to L3/N3 or L2/N2 wherever possible.
Multi-way Lighting
Multi-way lighting is configured in the Wondrwall app during commissioning, not by conventional wiring.
-
Each Light Switch must have its own power feed.
Common Installation Errors to Avoid
-
Missing neutral at the backbox.
-
Shallow backbox (<35 mm) causing pinched cables.
-
Incorrect output assignment (e.g. extractor fan sharing a lighting circuit).
-
Using L1/N1 before L3/N3 or L2/N2.
-
Cover left unsecured, misaligned, or overlapping the PIR sensor.
Handover to Wondrwall Engineer
Before leaving site:
-
Confirm the Light Switch powers correctly and all circuits function.
-
Ensure backbox depth and wiring space meet requirements.
FAQs
Q: Can the Wondrwall Light Switch be installed without a neutral?
No. A neutral conductor must be present at the backbox.
Q: How do I configure two-way lighting?
Do not wire conventionally. Connect each switch to a power feed; configuration is completed in the Wondrwall app during commissioning.
Q: How many circuits can one switch support?
Up to three. Unused outputs are reassigned during commissioning.
Q: Does the Light Switch fit standard UK backboxes?
Yes, but the backbox must be at least 35 mm deep.
